Volunteers and first responders helped residents recover from yesterday’s devastating storms in Central Illinois. Peoria Public Radio’s Alex Rusciano reports on some of the efforts:
Tornadoes, strong winds and heavy rains battered the region, leaving one person dead in the Tazewell County community of Washington. Entire subdivisions in the 15,000 person town were destroyed, leaving hundreds without homes. The Red Cross worked with area churches and community groups to open impromptu shelters. And other good citizens also pitched in to help an individual basis. Cindal Price is from Bloomington. She drove with her roommate to a shelter outside Washington loaded up with blankets and clothes for those in-need:
We take those things for granted every day. Every day I take for granted the fact that I have blankets on my bed, or I have a nice warm pillow or shampoo and I can take a shower when I get home and I mean we showed up and there are people wearing ponchos and barefoot.”
Some shelters had medical teams treating those with minor tornado injuries. Thousands of homes in the region also remained without power hours after the late-season storms.
