One of the 22 men in Wednesday’s Don’t Shoot call-in meeting is already in jail. 17-year-old Martell Perkins, a self-identified gang member, allegedly fired a gun while riding in a car hours after hearing the anti-violence message.
Perkins is expected to be charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member as well as aggravated unlawful use of weapon. Both are felonies. Prosecutors are also seeking a higher bond for Perkins.
Prior to Wednesday's accusations, Perkins allegedly served as the lookout in the May 9th beating of a 56-year-old man at a gas station on Knoxville. He also has a history of weapons charges as a juvenile.
A statement from the Peoria County State’s Attorney office says Perkins chose not to listen when he was told the violence would not be tolerated.
The statement says Perkins elected to be an example, and proves the promised consequences for firing a weapon.
