August unemployment down from July, but up year-over-year

Unemployment claims for the greater Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area were down July to August. But year to year unemployment grew.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security is reporting unemployment at eight-point-seven percent. That’s down by about one percent month to month and up about one percent from the same time last year.

The greatest job gains from July to August were in the areas of educational and health services, wholesale trade and government.

Temporary Layoffs in the area of manufacturing is considered the chief culprit in the year to year unemployment jump. There were 35-hundred more jobs last August compared to this year.
