IDOT invites residents to give input on bike transportation plan

Peoria will be part of a statewide effort to create an Illinois Bike Transportation Plan. The Illinois Department of Transportation is holding meetings around the state to gather information on how bicycling paths can be improved, and the challenges communities face in making themselves more bike-friendly. Brian Williamsen is a spokesman with IDOT.

“This is more of a general framework throughout the state, both in urban and rural areas, to find out what people are saying about biking, what they want to see and how we can shape our policy when it comes bicycle transportation in the future.”

IDOT is doing an analysis of current biking accommodations as part of the plan. It’s also reviewing national bicycling trends and best practices. The final document will include recommendations on bikeway safety, design and maintenance of facilities and ways to fund construction of bicycle-friendly spaces.

The public meeting is tomorrow from 6:30 to 8 at the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission office. Feedback is also being collected at www.IllinoisBikePlan.com. The new bike transportation plan is to be complete by the end of the year.
