Slight drop in area unemployment

The area’s unemployment rate dropped slightly from April to May. But the rate is up nearly one percent from last May.  The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports 7.8 percent of people living in the Metropolitan Statistical Area filed unemployment claims in May.That’s a 0.1 percent drop from April.  At the same time, 3,500 fewer jobs were added from the same time last year. That’s largely due to temporary layoffs in manufacturing and fewer business service jobs.  But, more than 1,000 jobs were added in educational-health service compared to last year.
