Area medical research on display at symposium

New medical research was on display at the Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center in Peoria.  More than 40 resident physicians with the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria presented their findings.

Reuben Valenzuela is a third year neurology resident at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.  His research documented the first reported case of a specific kind of meningitis present in patients taking a drug to treat multiple-sclerosis.   Valenzuela says the area’s strong medical community generates new research:

“It’s not the hospital in Chicago, or New York or Boston, but the research or the articles that we’re producing is comparable to any big institution I’d say.  We have great minds in Peoria,” Valenzuela says.

Other research at the symposium explored unusual medical cases, increasing childhood obesity rates, and new technology that allows faster testing of lab samples.
