Morton Civic Chorus Presents "Encore 2019" Next Week

Our guest this week is Denise Adams, director of the Morton Civic Chorus. The Chorus is presenting its spring fundraising concert, "Encore 2019" next week. It's also celebrating Adams' 35-year anniversary at the podium.

Adams talk a bit about the history of the Chorus: It grew out of a fundraising event to raise money for someone who needed a kidney transplant. Now, proceeds from the spring concert go to the Central Illinois Memorial Kidney Fund, which provides services to patients with chronic kidney disease.

Adams notes that their concerts include more choreography and blocking than most other choirs. She says she wants the performance to give the audience something to watch, as well as something to listen to. In that way, their concerts are more analogous to musical theatre performances.

She also reflects on how many singers in the group have been with the Chorus for 20 years or more, about the close bonds that develop as a result, and the emotional impact of making music with such a tight-knit group.

Performances of "Encore 2019" are next Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and next Sunday at 2:00 p.m., at the Hartman Center at Bradley University.
