The district announced Wednesday night it would use emergency days for the two-day closure, saying in a social media post that safety is the top priority.

Problems with bus service on the first day of school have prompted Pekin District 108 officials to cancel classes Thursday and Friday to rectify the transportation challenges.

The district announced Wednesday night it would use emergency days for the two-day closure, saying in a social media post that safety is the top priority.

“After working diligently with Alltown Bus Service throughout the day and this evening, we have determined that the current transportation situation does not meet our expectations for the safe and reliable transportation of our students,” the post read.

“Student safety must come first, and we are not willing to compromise on that responsibility.”

The new school year started Wednesday, but many families reported problems with the bus service with confusion over routes, stop locations and pick-up schedules.

The district has more than 3,000 students at 11 schools, from pre-K through 8th grade. Classes are expected to resume Monday.
