Bradley University is launching a new major.
According to a press release from the Peoria school, students will be able to work towards earning an undergraduate degree in Entertainment Engineering this fall.
The new major will be housed between the Slane College of Communications and Fine Arts and the Caterpillar College of Engineering and Technology. Bradley officials say the program is designed for students who “blend a scientific mind with a creative heart.”
“From hydraulics and pneumatics to rigging, motor and winch design, and structural engineering for theatrical production, students will gain hands-on training in the fast-paced, high-demand world of scenic automation,” reads a release from Bradley University. “Graduates will be prepared to work behind the scenes in film, television, theatre, theme parks, concert venues, touring productions, cruise ships, and immersive entertainment experiences like Cirque du Soleil, a Bradley industry partner.”
Students in the course of study will earn either a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Entertainment Engineering, as well as Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited Bachelor of Science in a field of engineering.
“Entertainment engineering is a field where you cannot afford to get it wrong,” said Johann Pershing, a Bradley Associate Professor of Theatre Technology. “The safety of performers and audiences is on the line. This is life or death work, and the technology is advancing faster than the industry can train people. That’s where we come in.”
School officials say scenic automation is the “fastest growing discipline” in technical theater. However, there are few institutions offering dedicated training. Bradley’s program is one of the first in the nation to be based in engineering, rather than theatre, and include the ABET accreditation.
The new offering for prospective Bradley students comes as president James Shadid works on “telling the school’s story.” Shadid told WCBU in an interview after his first 100 days that improving the offerings in all facets of the student experience at Bradley is a significant priority.
The Entertainment Engineering program officially launches Aug. 27.
