With the July 4 holiday approaching, the cost of gas in the Peoria area is climbing, but it's still well below this time last year.

The fuel cost analysis website GasBuddy shows the average price per gallon of unleaded in the Peoria market at around $3.36. That’s an increase of 7 cents from a week ago and almost 12 cents from the start of June.

However, the current average is still about 30 cents lower than what people were paying around Independence day in 2024.

GasBuddy shows the U.S. national average dropping to $3.14 after falling for the first time in three weeks. On the site’s weekly blog, head of petroleum analysis Patrick De Haan credits “easing tensions in the Middle East” for contributing to the lower price nationally.

“For motorists planning to hit the road for Independence Day, gas prices are expected to continue falling nearly coast to coast in the lead-up to July 4,” said De Haan. “Relief could expand as the holiday weekend approaches, with the national average on track to hit its lowest July 4 level since 2021 at $3.15 per gallon, we project.

“As long as tensions in the Middle East remain contained and the U.S. avoids a major hurricane, we could see the national average fall below $3 per gallon later this summer.”

The statewide average in Illinois is $3.47, higher than any state east of Nevada.
