3rd juvenile in Peoria County gang-related RICO case to be tried as an adult

A gavel rests on a judge's bench in a blurry courtroom. The text "WCBU Courts" sits on top of that photo.

A third juvenile facing Peoria County charges related to involvement with a violent street gang will go to trial in adult court.

The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday that a grand jury indicted Skylar Jordan, 17, under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, commonly known as the RICO statute.

Jordan also was indicted for unlawful use of weapons and is currently in custody. He is one of six juveniles and four adults who were indicted in October for their alleged connections to the “Snakes” street gang.

A police investigation into the gang linked the individuals to at least three murders, 12 shootings, and weapons violations. Police recovered 18 guns, including four that had been modified to operate as fully automatic.

Prior to Jordan’s transfer, two of the other juveniles in the case had their charges moved to adult court. Chavez Allen also is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, while Marshawn Smith is charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Both Allen and Smith were arrested as juveniles, but have since turned 18. Allen is being held under pretrial detention, while Smith already is serving a seven-year sentence for possession of a fully automatic weapon.
