Woman charged with aggravated DUI in fatal Washington crash

A woman has been charged with aggravated DUI resulting in a death after an incident that killed a pedestrian in Washington last week.

According to an affidavit obtained from the Tazewell County Circuit Clerk’s Office, Sue Sagel, 64, was allegedly the driver of the vehicle that struck and killed a man crossing at Washington Road and Lakeshore Drive around 10 p.m. last Wednesday.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood identified the man as Michael Ayers, 35. Harwood said an autopsy showed Ayers suffered multiple blunt force trauma injuries from a vehicle.

Ayers was transported from the scene to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

According to the affidavit, Washington Police officers responding to the scene found Ayers injured in the road. Police allege Sagel admitted to driving the vehicle that struck Ayers, and officers report noticing the smell of alcohol on her breath, as well as slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.

Court records say Sagel agreed to perform a Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test and officers noted signs of alcohol consumption. Sagel allegedly declined any further field testing, but agreed to blood and urine tests.

Court scheduling shows Sagel was granted conditional release. She was charged with aggravated DUI last Wednesday. Her next court appearance is May 5.
