Peoria County officials wind down services, prepare to close Landfill 2

Green For Life Environmental Inc., the Canadian waste management firm that bought Peoria Disposal Company last year, has withdrawn its request to delay construction on Peoria City/County Landfill No. 3. The new landfill will be built adjacent to the other two landfills, west of Edwards.

Peoria County officials say the closing of Landfill 2 will not impact residents with curbside contract pickup, but it will affect residents who use the free load program, or dispose of construction debris and large items at the facility.

Peoria County and city officials are preparing the public for the closing of the shared Landfill 2.

County officials say the move will not impact residents with curbside contract pickup. However, it will affect residents who use the free load program, or dispose of construction debris and large items at the landfill.

All three of those services will end at Landfill 2, located west of Edwards, after Apr. 19.

After that date, county residents can take a weekly free load and debris to either the Indian Creek Landfill on McMullen Road in Hopedale, or the Wigand Transfer Station on North Route 29 near Chillicothe.

Construction debris also can be taken to the Tazewell Transfer Station on East Washington Street in East Peoria.

The closure of Landfill 2 is the next step in a lengthy process to begin construction on the future Peoria City/County Landfill 3 with the company Green For Life, or GFL, Environmental. In September, the City of Peoria and Peoria County finalized a new agreement with GFL pushing the expected operation date of Landfill 3 back to 2035, nearly a decade later than most recently planned.

The delays follow extensive planning and permitting changes required through state agencies after confusion surrounding a previously overlooked abandoned surface mine held up the start of construction on the Landfill 3 site.

In the meantime, GFL Environmental will utilize its Indian Creek Landfill and begin construction on a transfer station on an already-sited plot of land in Pottstown. The Pottstown Transfer Station is expected to be operational in 2026.

As part of the negotiated contract, GFL also offers curbside trash and recycling services to Peoria County residents in unincorporated areas at a new flat rate.
