Health officials have confirmed testing has identified a rabid bat in Peoria County.

According to Peoria County Animal Protection Services [PCAPS] director Becky Spencer, any person who is exposed to a bat should report their exposure to PCAPS to assess their need for rabies testing and treatment.

Spencer said rabies is a dangerous but preventable disease that affects the central nervous system of humans and other mammals. It’s typically transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal, like skunks, bats, or raccoons. It also can be carried by domestic animals, like dogs and cats.

Officials have several guidelines to help protect people and their pets from rabies. If a bat is in your home, leave the room and close the door, place a towel under the door to keep the bat trapped and contact PCAPS.

All animal bites should be reported to PCAPS. If you’re bitten by an animal, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water and seek immediate medical attention.

Residents also should notify PCAPS or the health department if they suspect themselves, a household member, or a pet has been exposed. This extends to situations like seeing a bat in a room with a sleeping child or adult.

Tightly close all outside doors to prevent bats from entering buildings and examine your home for any holes that might allow bats in. Officials said any opening larger than a quarter inch by a half-inch should be caulked.

Also, be sure any dogs or cats are updated on their rabies vaccination.

Encourage children to immediately tell an adult if they are scratched or bitten by an animal, as well as teaching them not to approach or touch any animal they don’t know.

PCAPS can be contacted at 309-672-2440.
