A man is dead after an apartment fire Monday afternoon in Tremont.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood identified the 69-year old man as Richard Hayden. Harwood says Hayden arrived by EMS at OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria Monday afternoon suffering from smoke inhalation, severe burns throughout his nasal and oral airways and throat and severe second and third degree burns on his body.
Despite emergency care, Harwood says Hayden was pronounced deceased at OSF just after 2 p.m.
Tremont Police Chief Robert Siwak says Tremont Police and Fire, the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Department and Mackinaw firefighters all responded to the 100 block of North Chestnut in Tremont around 1 p.m. for a reported apartment fire.
Emergency responders found Hayden severely injured in front of the home and transported him to OSF. Siwak says no other injuries were reported as a result of the fire. The three-unit apartment building was destroyed.
Siwak says the Tremont Police Department does not suspect foul play.
Coroner Harwood says the cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Department.
A toxicology test is pending, as required by Illinois law.
