The former chief financial officer for the Peoria Citizens Committee for Economic Opportunity is making a run for Peoria city treasurer.
Asya Washum announced her candidacy Tuesday. She says one of her top issues is improving efficiency and functionality in the office.
“I always say you can determine the health of any organization, home or individual, by the finances and so understanding how the money is flowing, what needs to happen, and then also any gaps in the service,” she said.
Her platform also includes increasing transparency.
“Ensuring that the funds are being used, and every single person who wants to know understands, even on a granular level, how the funds are being used within this city,” Washum said.
Washum said she ultimately would want to ensure that the money is working for the city and that funds are being properly used.
Former city treasurer Stephen Morris left the position in May. His term is being completed by former WTVP CEO Chet Tomczyk.
The municipal election is April 1, 2025.
