Two prominent Peoria figures joined six other downstate individuals honored by the State of Illinois for their achievements during a ceremony recognizing Black History Month on Tuesday in Springfield.
Renowned painter and sculptor Preston Jackson and retired professional basketball player A.J. Guyton were presented awards by State Treasurer Michael Frerichs during the program.
“We acknowledge the great achievements and contributions of African Americans every day, not only during the month of February,” Frerichs said in a media release.
Jackson, who was unable to attend the event, was honored for Outstanding Achievement in Arts and Humanities, while Guyton was recognized for Outstanding Achievement in Sportsmanship.
Guyton, who works as the director of district athletics for Peoria Public Schools, acknowledged his family and District 150 administrators for giving him an opportunity to make an impact in the community.
“I often say to people I couldn't imagine coming up during this time period, because I might not have gotten to where I've gotten – where I’ve gotten European Championships, playing an NBA, getting inducted to four different Hall of Fames, being here, standing here talking to you – if I didn't have that foundation in public school athletics that kept me grounded, kept me safe, [and] created a safe space for us to play into and to prosper.”
Others honored during Tuesday’s ceremony included retired Secretary of State Jesse White (for outstanding leadership), State Sen. Doris Turner (commitment as an elected official), and retired NCAA basketball official and school administrator Ed Hightower (commitment in education).
Frerichs held a celebration earlier this month to honor Black community leaders in the Chicago area.
“These leaders are making a difference in the lives of our youth, fighting for a more equitable Illinois, and educating students for a bright future,” said Frerichs. “We applaud their dedication to making our communities a better place to live, work, and raise a family.”
