A Peoria man is charged in connection with a deadly hit-and-run earlier this month.

Peoria County State's Attorney Jodi Hoos said Demoriele Sims, 36, is charged with failure to report an accident for the hit-and-run that killed 38-year-old Quentin Shinkle.

Police found Shinkle severely injured in the 2100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in the early morning of Jan. 13. He died in the hospital days later.

Surveillance video led officers to a suspect vehicle registered to Sims. They found the vehicle with a caved-in windshield, as well as bumper, grille and roof damage. Additionally, police say pieces of plastic from the crash scene matched missing pieces from Sims' car.

Police took Sims into custody on Thursday, when they say he admitted to hitting Shinkle and fleeing the scene.

Hoos said her office has filed a petition to detain Sims with a hearing set for Monday. Sims will remain in custody until then.
