Peoria police say two people have been arrested in connection with the death of a 13-month-old child, who was taken unresponsive last month to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
In a social media post, Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood identified the child as Hezekiah Williams of Peoria. Harwood said the baby was initially taken to Carle Health Methodist Hospital before being transferred to Saint Francis in grave condition and admitted to pediatric intensive care.
The child died on Dec. 27, more than a week after being taken to the hospital by ambulance.
According to a Peoria Police Department media release, Tasheaunna Williams, 26, and Nausicca Thomas, 27, were taken into custody without Friday in Morton. They were transported to the Peoria County Jail on charges of aggravated battery, endangering the life and health of a child, and reckless conduct. Both are on release pending their trials.
Officers were called to Saint Francis on Dec. 19 and were told the baby had been given an over-the-counter medication. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and Pediatric Resource Center were both contacted.
Detectives spoke with the child’s guardians and the hospital staff, and initiated their investigation.
Harwood ruled the death a homicide. In his post, he said preliminary autopsy findings are pending further studies and toxicology testing. He noted those preliminary findings showed evidence of physical abuse and neglect.
The case remains under investigation by police and the coroner’s office.
