Community Development Director Ty Livingston references development in the bustling commercial Levee District as an example of transformation and evolution in East Peoria over the last 25 years.

Developers Cullinan Properties say Best Buy and Boot Barn are the latest additions to East Peoria's Levee District.

Best Buy is leaving its current location on Big Hollow Road in Peoria. Boot Barn sells "western apparel and work-related footwear" and is new to the area.

"We are thrilled to welcome both Boot Barn and Best Buy to the Levee District," said Kathleen Cullinan Brill, Director of Leasing and Strategic Partnerships at Cullinan. "The addition of these stores is a testament to the growth and vitality of this community. We are especially proud that Best Buy has chosen to remain in the Metro Peoria area."

East Peoria Mayor John Kahl expressed his enthusiasm for the new businesses in a news release.

"These announcements reinforce East Peoria's position as a dynamic hub for commerce and community activity," said Kahl.

Peoria City Council member Andre Allen commented on the announcement Tuesday morning. He called Best Buy's move "disappointing."

"However, I want to express my sincere gratitude for their many years of service to our community and wish them continued success in their new location. I'm encouraged that they will remain in the Greater Peoria area," Allen said. "Looking ahead, I remain optimistic about the future of this space, as it has already drawn interest from several retailers."

Allen represents District 4, which includes Best Buy's current location on Big Hollow Road.

The Levee District is currently the nexus of several construction projects. Those include the $65 million Blutowne Apartments and the new East Peoria Police station. Both developments are just across the street from the commercial area.

Cullinan's release does not specify where in the Levee District the stores will be located.

Both stores will open later this year.
