A man suspected of killing a woman and shooting another man in the leg over the weekend is dead after shooting himself in the head, Peoria police said Tuesday.
Peoria police said officers responded to a 10-round ShotSpotter alert in the 600 block of East Republic just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday. A 48-year-old woman with apparent gunshot wounds was found on the scene and transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said the victim was Johnnetta Smith of Peoria. She likely died moments after the shooting, he said.
Shortly before 6 p.m., officers got another call about a shooting in the 3500 block of Sodus Court. A man, 63, found there with a gunshot wound to the leg was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Police said the suspect in both shootings was 27-year-old Kenten J. Watkins, Jr. He was found lying in a driveway a short time after the second shooting, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Harwood said he died instantly.
Peoria police said all three incidents remain under investigation.
