Long-awaited roadwork on Business 24 in Washington is kicking off Monday.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is resurfacing the roadway between Legion Road and Zinser Place.

The crumbling condition of the major east-west thoroughfare through the city has long been a flashpoint of contention for the city council, local businesses, and drivers.

The project will reduce the roadway to one lane in each direction. Resurfacing should wrap up by the end of November. Sidewalk and traffic signal work is set for completion in the spring.

Motorists should seek alternate routes if possible.
