Peoria Mayor Rita Ali has chosen Chet Tomczyk to finish out the unexpired term of the former city treasurer.
Tomczyk served as president and CEO of public television station WTVP from 1996-2014, and was appointed to its revamped board of directors in February. He will replace Stephen Morris, who left the treasurer position in May.
“Mr. Morris had asked the mayor to find a replacement, that he was looking to step down from his position due to a change in jobs for him,” said city manager Patrick Urich. “So from that perspective, the mayor went out, and it's taken a while, but I think we've got a good person there to fill the spot.”
Morris, the former Peoria County Republican Party chairman, was elected in 2021, succeeding Patrick Nichting. Ali expressed a desire to choose a “placeholder” for the remainder of the term, which expires next May.
Tomczyk retired from WTVP in 2014, after concurrently serving for one year as interim CEO of the University of Illinois’ WILL public radio and TV stations. His appointment will be finalized and oath of office administered at Tuesday’s Peoria City Council meeting.
