The Morton Village Board has fired fire chief Joe Kelley.

With no discussion, the board voted unanimously Monday night not to reinstate the fire chief after village president Jeff Kaufman removed him from duty last month.

Kaufman says Kelley broke a residency rule by moving outside of Morton, and also wasn't driving his village-issued, take- home vehicle in violation of code.

Kelley first joined the Morton Fire Department in 1991, and became chief in 1999. He made $141,278 in total compensation last year.

Most Morton firefighters are no longer subject to a residency requirement after it was eliminated to draw more recruits . But the head of the department still is.
