Man charged with murder after fatal shooting outside downtown Peoria bar

A Peoria resident faces felony charges after a 45-year-old man was fatally shot last Friday outside a downtown bar.

Lacorles Edwards, 40, is charged with first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

The Peoria County State's Attorney's Office said Sylvester Erving approached Edwards on the street in the 500 block of Main around 2:30 a.m. Prosecutors said surveillance video shows Erving tried to leave multiple times, but Edwards continued to fight with him.

Edwards then pulled out a gun, shot Erving at close range, and ran, prosecutors said. The gun was found in a bucket of water in a nearby alley.

Erving was found outside the Neon Bison bar and taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition. Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood pronounced Erving dead just before midnight Saturday.

Walter Dearmond, 44, of Peoria, also was arrested for unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon in connection with the case. Officials said Dearmond is seen on camera picking something up off the ground near Erving after he was shot.

Dearmond was later found with a gun. He reportedly told police the gun was what he retrieved from the ground. Erving also was armed when the shooting happened, according to witnesses.

Both men will remain in pretrial detention.
