A man is dead after an incident early Thursday morning in Peoria.

Police were pulling someone over near West Forrest Hill shortly before 2 a.m. when they heard the sound of gunfire. A wrecked vehicle was found in the 2100 block of West Forrest Hill. The man inside the vehicle had been shot.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood identified him Friday as 44-year-old Lawrence Jones of Peoria.

The coroner said Jones likely died instantly from severe and rapid blood loss after he was shot in the back.

There is no suspect information available.
