Out & About in Greater Peoria: Peoria Blues & Heritage Festival, a trek through nature and a cardboard boat race

Here are 3 things to do for the weekend of Sept. 1-3, 2023, curated by WCBU's Meagan Ruger-Smith. You can find more coverage on our Out & About - Arts & Music page or by subscribing to WCBU's Weekend Fanfare email newsletter, which goes out every Friday.

Enjoy some blues for Labor Day Weekend: Jay Goldberg Events & Entertainment in association with the Illinois Blues Coalition is proud to welcome a selection of artists to the previously released 2023 lineup for the 33rd Annual Peoria Blues & Heritage Music Festival this Labor Day weekend. Featured artists include Here Come the Mummies, Christone Kingfish Ingram and more!

Bring out your inner Bear Grylls: A change in season means a change in the plants available for foraging. Learn from an expert about wild medicinals, how to identify local plants and mushrooms, and go foraging for fall plants on the Flood Plain Trail. Tomorrow morning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., join Ken Johnson for this Wildlife Prairie Park Skills Training Class.

Race a cardboard boat: Looking for some fun in the sun? Join the IVY Club this Sunday for their Cardboard Boat Race from noon to 3 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Alzheimer's Association. There will be music, food and drinks!

Meagan Ruger-Smith is a sophomore sports communication major at Bradley University, with minors in ethics and journalism. Meagan joined WCBU in 2023.
