Federal jury finds in favor of Peoria police officer who fatally shot Luis Cruz in 2018

A federal jury has sided with Peoria Police officer Ryan Isonhart in a wrongful death lawsuit filed against him by the family of Luis Cruz.

WMBD reports the jury found Isonhart acted appropriately when he fatally shot Cruz five years ago. That's in keeping with the finding by then-Peoria County State's Attorney Jerry Brady when he declined to press charges.

Cruz's family had sought more than $15 million in damages.

In a statement, Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria said the police department is pleased with the verdict, but he recognizes every shooting involving an officer is difficult. He said he recognizes many people in the community are still hurting, adding the police department is working to build relationships across the community.
