The Allied Iron and Steel building in south Peoria is deemed a total loss after a fire early Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to the 2000 block of West Clark Street at 3:45 a.m. after a passerby noticed the fire from Route 29. Multiple crews were needed to contain the blaze.

Battalion Chief Steve Rada said it was difficult to get the fire under control because part of the building's roof collapsed into the structure, preventing water access to the fire. An aerial truck pumped out more than 1,000 gallons of water per minute to extinguish the fire.

The fire was under control at 6:30 a.m., said the fire department.

Nobody was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage is estimated at $500,000.
