Peoria police say a woman died Wednesday night after being struck by a vehicle as she walked across a downtown street near the Peoria Civic Center.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood on Thursday identified the victim as Jayne English, 77. He said she suffered multiple blunt force trauma injuries and died instantly.

According to a police department news release, officers found English in the 200 block of SW Jefferson shortly after 6 p.m., about an hour before the Bradley basketball game at Carver Arena.

Initial information indicates an SUV traveling southbound on Jefferson hit English as she tried to cross near the Liberty Street intersection. The driver remained on the scene.

Harwood said the woman was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:50 p.m. Toxicology tests are pending.

The incident remains under investigation by the Peoria Police Traffic Unit.
