Man dies after falling from a roof at OSF Saint Francis hospital

WCBU News/Jeff Smudde

A 21-year-old man died after falling from a roof at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria on Friday afternoon, according to county coroner Jamie Harwood.

The coroner said Joseph Croegaert was brought to the hospital in a private vehicle for an undisclosed medical condition at approximately 3 p.m.

Before entering the hospital, Croegaert somehow gained access to the secured roof area above the ambulance bay and subsequently fell to the ground for unknown reasons.

Emergency department personnel responded immediately and began trauma care and resuscitation, but Croegaert was pronounced dead shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday.

Harwood said an autopsy and toxicology tests on Croegaert are scheduled for Monday, and the cause of the fall remains under investigation.

In a statement, OSF HealthCare said no one has ever accessed the secure area above the ambulance bay in the past. The statement said they are working closely with facility team members to determine how the man got on the roof, and what can be done to prevent it from happening again.
