The union representing teachers at Peoria Public Schools will conduct a strike authorization vote on Thursday afternoon.
The move by the Peoria Federation of Teachers Local 780 comes after the first round of federal mediation between the union and District 150 failed to produce a new contract for teachers.
While the authorization vote does not mean a strike is imminent, it would enable the union’s negotiators to give PPS a 10-day notice of an intent to strike.
Peoria teachers are currently working under an expired contract. Negotiations for a new agreement began on March 29. The union sought the federal mediation after 19 bargaining meetings did not result in a new agreement.
The teachers’ union meeting for the strike authorization vote is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Woodruff High School. Another mediation session is planned for Sept. 7.
