Peoria market’s average price for gas dips back below $5 a gallon

The average price for gas in the Peoria metro area dropped below $5 a gallon Thursday for the first time in more than a month.

The average price for gas in the Peoria metro area dropped below $5 a gallon Thursday for the first time in more than a month.

The price for a gallon of gas in the Peoria metro area is back below $5 for the first time in more than a month.

According to the AAA motor club’s website, the average for regular unleaded in the Peoria-Pekin market is $4.996. That's down from a peak of $5.291 on June 13 after the area crossed the $5 barrier for the first time on June 2.

The national average is $4.752, while Illinois checks in at $5.232. State lawmakers delayed a 2.5-cent motor fuel tax increase that was scheduled to go into effect on July 1.

The average price for a gallon of diesel in the Peoria market stands at $5.772, slightly higher than the statewide average of $5.76.
