Pekin boy dies after being struck by a semi truck on Route 29

A 3-year-old Pekin boy died Thursday after being hit by a semi-tractor trailer on Illinois Route 29.

Tazewell County Coroner Charles Hanley said an autopsy conducted Friday morning determined Damien Legassick died as a result of blunt force head trauma.

Pekin police spokeswoman Billie Ingles said the semi was traveling south in the 1900 block of South 2nd Street when the child entered the roadway and was struck around 3:20 p.m.

Despite attempts at life-saving measures, the boy died at the scene. The driver of the truck was taken to a local hospital, but was not injured.

The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police ,Pekin police, the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office, and the coroner’s office.
