The Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council is adding a new annex to its Pekin Training Center to train up the next generation of union construction workers.
Ground was broken last week on the new 15,000 square foot annex.
"It will come out to about 50,000 square feet where we are training our apprentices for the whole campus," said Rob Swegle, director of the Pekin campus' training program.
Nearly 800 apprentices and journeymen are trained in carpentry and in millwright work at the Pekin facility each year.
"This expanded training center will provide members both classroom and hands-on training to guarantee that the safest, best-trained workforce is at the forefront of technology and to meet the employment needs of our industry," said Vince Sticca, director of the Mid-American Regional Council Apprentice and Training Program.
The new training annex is set for completion next year. It's located at 904 Brenkman Drive in Pekin.
