Peoria area now expected to get less snow with winter storm than originally forecast

The National Weather Service in Lincoln is declaring a winter storm warning for Greater Peoria starting 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The Peoria County Sheriff's Office has issued a traffic collision alert as snow continues to fall in Central Illinois Wednesday.
Anyone in a traffic collision in Peoria County where no one is injured should exchange information and report the crash to the records bureau at the Peoria County Sheriff's Office no later than 48 hours after the alert is lifted.
Revised snow forecast now predicts 3 to 4 inches for Peoria
The National Weather Service now believes the Peoria area will see around 3 to 4 inches of snow Wednesday.
That's down significantly from the 5-8 inches in the forecast for the area Tuesday. The NWS revised its models downward on Tuesday afternoon, then once more early Wednesday.
Moderate to heavy precipitation is expected between noon and 6 p.m. Slippery roads remain a concern during the evening commute on Wednesday.
ICC shifts to remote learning, campuses closed
Illinois Central College has announced it will have a Remote Learning Day on Wednesday, due to the anticipated storm.
According to a brief media release, classes will be held virtually. Campuses are closed and all activities are canceled.
Peoria Public Schools make schedule changes due to snow
Peoria School District 150 announced scheduling changes, ahead of Wednesday's forecast of heavy snow.
Due to the weather, kindergarten through eighth grade students will be dismissed an hour earlier than usual at 1:30 p.m. High School dismissal stays at the regular Wednesday time of 1:30 p.m.
Additionally, district officials say all after-school programs planned for Wednesday are canceled.
Peoria Public Works pretreating roads ahead of expected wintry weather
Peoria Public Works will get started on pretreating roads overnight ahead of anticipated heavy snowfall on Wednesday.
The road treatment will focus on overpasses and hills that can be especially prone to ice build-up. Snow plow drivers will begin around-the-clock shifts starting Wednesday morning. Their efforts will focus on main roads and emergency routes while the snow is still falling.
Residential street treatment begins once snowfall has stopped if more than 2 inches accumulates. Parking bans are automatically in effect in the city of Peoria if 2 or more inches of snow is in the forecast.
A winter storm warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Wednesday through 3 p.m. Thursday. The afternoon and evening are expected to be particularly hazardous for travelling.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln is declaring a winter storm warning from 6 a.m. Wednesday through 3 a.m. Thursday in Peoria, Tazewell, Woodford, Fulton, Knox, Marshall, Stark, and Mason counties.
The NWS says snowfall accumulations of 5 to 8 inches are expected in Peoria. Five to 9 inches are possible in Lacon.
The NWS projects a 90% chance of snowfall hitting 4 inches or more in Peoria. There's a 10% chance of hitting the upper threshold of 8 inches.
