Co-owner and main baker of iconic East Peoria donut shop dies

A co-owner and primary baker for East Peoria staple Carl's Bakery and Restaurant has died.

David "Dave" Armstrong, 76, of East Peoria died on Sunday, Aug. 18.

According to his obituary, besides being the full time baker behind Carl's daily donuts, Armstrong spent 32 years as a public works foreman for the City of East Peoria. He was also veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Vietnam War.

In a Facebook post, a representative of the restaurant writes: "He was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather, and we will miss him dearly."

The East Camp Street bakery and its distinctive landmark chicken statue will continue operating and was back open Thursday through Saturday this week.

Armstrong's visitation is Sunday, Aug. 25 at Eastside Bible Church in Morton from 2 to 4 p.m. His funeral is Monday, Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. at Eastside as well.
