Rockford Mayor Says He Won't Run For Congress in 2022

Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara says he will not run for retiring U.S. Representative Cheri Bustos’ seat in 2022.

McNamara said Monday in an announcement that he was humbled that people in the community and across the country have asked him to run for the seat in Illinois’ 17th District. But he said that after much discussion and reflection, he has decided that his heart is in Rockford and he wants to continue as mayor.

He added that, while he was proud of the city’s progress under his administration, there is more to be done. He said that he felt that he could do the most good for the community by remaining in his current position.

McNamara had said he was considering whether to make a run for the seat after the Democrat announced in April that she would not seek another term.
