It's been three years since a fire destroyed the Keokuk City Hall. Now construction crews are hard at work renovating a former bank building to take over as the city's offices.
City Administrator Cole O'Donnell said construction crews have begun the renovations. "The construction company has now been working for one full week, but right now it's a lot of deconstruction to get to things that need to be updated and renovated," O'Donnell said.
The building is the former Connections Bank building on Fifth and Main Streets. O'Donnell said hadn't personally seen the progress, but said the contractor projected the work to be completed in September.
O'Donnell said the total cost to renovate the building will be between $1.3 and $1.4 million dollars, although he does say that will be completely paid by the insurance company.
Since the fire, the city has been operating out of temporary offices at Pilot Grove Savings Bank, and holding council meetings at the Keokuk School District office.
