Sarah Jesmer

Mourners packed a northern Illinois high school Wednesday afternoon to remember an Illinois trooper killed in the line of duty.

Trooper Brooke Jones-Story was fatally struck during a roadside inspection in Stephenson County on Thursday.

A celebration of life was held at Warren High School.

In audio provided by WIFR-TV, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker offered condolences on behalf of the state.

"I promise that I will carry the burden of action that our collective grief conveys every day of my administration," Pritzker said.

Illinois State Police Acting Director Brendan Kelly spoke to the members of law enforcement who packed the auditorium at Warren High School.

"To honor her, you must know that the most important equipment you have for your mission is not your badge or your firearm or your vehicle, but your mind, your heart, and your soul,” Kelly said.

Kelly acknowledged it has been a deadly year for state troopers. Gerald Ellis, was killed by a wrong-way driver on Saturday on I-94. Christopher Lambert was fatally struck in January near Northbrook.
