A crane has been moved to 2nd Avenue's 1300 block near the 122-year-old courthouse.

Opponents of tearing down the Rock Island County courthouse have won a preliminary victory.

At a hearing this afternoon, a Peoria County judge issued a temporary restraining order, stopping a contractor from starting the demolition.

Bob Westphal, a member of the Rock Island County Board, attended the hour-long hearing. He says Tenth Circuit Judge Jodi Hoos heard arguments from attorneys for the board and Public Building Commission, and a lawyer representing Landmarks Illinois and other preservation advocates.

The next hearing is scheduled for March 19th, again in Peoria, on motions to dismiss the lawsuit.
