LaHood: Trump Immigration Order Shows Need for Immigration Reform

Peoria Public Radio

President Trump signed an executive order today that keeps the “zero tolerance” immigration policy in place, but stops children from being taken from their families at the border.

Congressman Darin LaHood says separating families was never a long-term solution and was happy to see the president end it.

“A number of our immigration laws are unclear, or been interpreted different ways by previous administrations, both Republicans and Democrats. And frankly, we’ve ignored some of the laws that have been in place, and now I think is the time to change that and have a comprehensive immigration reform bill.”

LaHood says his two priorities in immigration reform are securing the border and moving toward skills-based immigration policies. Both are represented in one of the measures up for a vote in the House.
