Gov. Bruce Rauner has chosen a former federal prosecutor and assistant state inspector general to be Illinois' next executive inspector general.
Rauner announced Susan Haling's appointment Wednesday. She previously was first assistant inspector general for the state, overseeing more than 70 employees in Chicago and Springfield. She also was an assistant U.S. attorney in the Northern District of Illinois' criminal division.
Haling succeeds Maggie Hickey who is joining a private law firm. Haling said she's "humbled" by the opportunity to lead the state's Office of the Inspector General.
Haling's husband, Theodore "TJ" Hengesbach is inspector general of the Illinois Toll Highway. The governor's office says the state inspector general has no authority over the toll highway inspector general but Haling would be screened from matters involving the highway if any came before her new office.
