Chicago Files Suit Against Opioid Drug Distributors

ClevelandClinic.org

The city of Chicago has filed a federal lawsuit against three distributors of opioids citing "unlawful and unfettered" distribution of the drugs in the city.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the lawsuit Tuesday. If follows litigation the city filed in 2014 against opioid manufacturers. Emanuel says the city wants to "end irresponsible practices and hold companies accountable for their deceptive actions."

The lawsuit is against AmerisourceBergen Drug Corporation, Cardinal Health Inc. and McKesson Corporation. City attorneys say the companies "failed to reject or report suspicious orders and placed profits over public health."

AmerisourceBergen said it has halted thousands of potentially suspicious orders and is dedicated to lessening "the diversion of these drugs without interfering with clinical decisions made by doctors."

Cardinal Health and McKesson didn't immediately respond to emails seeking comment.
