The Illinois Senate has OK'd a revised Medicaid funding plan for hospitals.
The 53-3 vote Wednesday came just hours after House approval.
The legislation is an answer to a federal requirement that cost-cutting managed-care programs cover more Medicaid patients.
The hospital assessment program is responsible for distributing $3.5 billion to hospitals around the state. Hospitals pay a tax that is then matched by the federal government.
But two Chicago-based hospitals say they will be forced to close. They don't receive enough funds under the updated program.
The plan now goes to Gov. Bruce Rauner. His office did not immediately respond to a question about whether he supports it.
The state is racing the clock. The current hospital assessment plan is set to expire June 30 and still needs approval from the federal government.
