Task Force to Consider Construction at Veterans Home

A task force created by Illinois' governor to address the deadly Legionnaires' disease at the Illinois Veterans Home will review the possibility for new construction at the facility.

Gov. Bruce Rauner created the Quincy Veterans Home Water Management Task Force after his week-long stay at the veterans home last month. The task force will review a Legionella response plan and plumbing assessment for the home. There have been 13 deaths at facility since 2015 due to Legionnaires' disease and dozens more have been sickened.

The task force will be led by Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs Director Erica Jeffries and will include federal, state and local officials.

In announcing the task force's plans on Tuesday, Rauner's office also noted remediation efforts already underway at the home. They include replacing all 63 resident room faucets and installing filters and changing them monthly.
