Without a new spending bill the federal government will partially shut down at midnight tonight. The House yesterday passed a stopgap to keep the government funded until February 16thbut it doesn’t look like that bill has enough votes to pass the Senate.

Republican John Shimkus represents Illinois’ 15th Congressional District, which is made up of all or parts of 33 counties in central and southern Illinois. He spoke with Illinois Public Media's Niala Boodhoo , host of the daily talk show The 21st before yesterday’s House vote.

The federal government will partially shut down tonight at midnight unless the House, Senate, and President can agree on a new spending bill. You can hear Congressman Shimkus' full interview tonight at 6 on The 21st on Peoria Public Radio.
