Democrats Vie for Rep. Davis' Congressional Seat

Five Democrats who want to unseat 13th District congressman Rodney Davis met the public at a candidates’ forum Thurs. at the Champaign Public Library.

As expected, all five came out against the GOP tax reform plan. Jonathan Ebel of Champaign says history proves the tax proposal won't work.

“It is a return to trickle-down economics. We saw it fail in the Reagan era, it failed in the Bush era and it will fail again,” Ebel said.

Erik Jones of Edwardsville says the plan creates too many corporate tax loopholes. He says any tax break should include middle-class tax relief and strict requirements for corporations.

“Let’s put some teeth on it and make sure they’re going to keep jobs in America. And that’s the only way you’ll keep that tax cut,” Jones said.

Betsy Dirksen Londrigan and Angel Sides of Springfield … and David Gill of Bloomington also spoke out against the tax legislation.

The candidates also answered questions about health care, gun control, gay rights and the environment.
