More Chicago Officers Opt to Grieve Punishment

An investigation has found that in recent years more Chicago police officers have opted to grieve their punishments, stalling some cases for years.

The investigation revealed that as of this month 280 disciplinary grievances remained open. Seven of those cases were filed six years ago.

Officers can dispute, and sometimes avoid or reduce their punishments by filing a grievance with the department's Management and Labor Affairs Sections. An officer is allowed to keep working while their case is pending.

A police spokesman says the department can't track all of their cases without opening the paper files of each one.

It's unclear how many cases are typically sent through grievance process system or how many are open because department officials never got a union response.
