New Decatur Public Housing Sat Empty for Months

Decatur officials spent most of a $2 million grant for an affordable housing project, but the houses sat empty for months.

Construction of the project was announced in 2013, relying partially on money from the state attorney general's office as part of a national foreclosure settlement against major banks.

The interior work finished in January, but housing officials were concerned over sale prices, which took until May to finalize. Also, landscaping took time.

City officials say they're now contacting potential buyers.

Some social service agencies say it was a shame they didn't know about the homes earlier.

An attorney general spokeswoman says the office supported the additional time it took to "plan appropriately" and looks forward to families moving in.
